Advancing Talent Management Through AI and Technology

When looking to optimize your workforce technology stack, often the first thoughts are on hiring and onboarding new talent. However, just as important – if not more so – is constructing a solid strategy for retaining your talent and building your workforce from within. This is where advanced talent management technology can become a priceless investment.

It is critical to engage, evaluate, develop and manage your top talent to increase productivity, encourage company loyalty, increase worker skills and future-proof your organization for growth and expansion. You also support succession planning efforts by creating structure programs around tenured workers mentoring newer staff.

To support HR leaders in building their internal team management programs, Talent Tech Labs has evaluated and characterized more than 800 vendors selecting nearly 500 vendors with the most innovative solutions for each stage of talent management.

Guiding Every Step of the Worker Journey

Similar to Talent Tech Labs’ Talent Acquisition Technology Ecosystem 13 and Extended Workforce Technology Ecosystem 1.0, this third version of the Talent Management Technology Ecosystem includes the most up-to-date AI-enabled technologies with proven capabilities. While the TA and contingent workforce tools are focused on hiring and sourcing talent, talent management tools are dedicated to developing your existing workforce — upskilling and reskilling, assessing and evaluating, as well as engaging and rewarding employees to foster growth and satisfaction.

By deploying these technologies, workforce leaders are better equipped to retain top talent and increase the value of their current teams, without the expense of onboarding new talent.

The talent technology world is vast, highly complex and challenging to navigate effectively. The Talent Management Technology Ecosystem provides a taxonomy for understanding the available technologies by categorizing vendors into management stages, as well as verticals and sub-verticals, clearly identifying which tools best address specific workforce needs.

The accompanying report also outlines the current trends that are shaping the workforce technology landscape and what trends to expect in the future.

What is New: Updating for Today’s Workforce Trends

This third edition of the Talent Management Technology Ecosystem reflects the changes demanded by the rapidly shifting talent market and the disruptive technology that is transforming the landscape. The new edition adds or renames verticals and sub-verticals to address the major changes in how businesses are managing their workforce. Some of the changes include:

  • Adding the Employee Experience Center sub-vertical to reflect an increase in all-in-one employee engagement platforms
  • Moving the Change Management vertical to the Manage stage which better matches the complimentary technologies that serve change management and workforce management
  • Introducing AI Solutions as a new vertical to incorporate the large influx of AI-based technologies pouring into the market

By consistently evaluating burgeoning technologies, established vendors and the needs of the market, Talent Tech Labs ensures each ecosystem remains relevant as a helpful guide to the best technology available for the specific needs of each business.

The Stages of the Talent Management Technology Ecosystem

When presenting the technology that offers the latest and most trusted services for HR leaders, Talent Tech Labs categorized each vendor into verticals and sub-verticals within four different talent management stages. Each stage represents the journey of a worker and the ways the organization can nurture their corporate culture and the careers of their people.

Engage Stage

The Engage stage encompasses three verticals that focus on employee health, satisfaction and engagement to maximize productivity, collaboration and workforce effectiveness. These technologies address employee engagement and experience, rewards and recognition, as well as employee wellness.

The vendors featured in this stage support employee health benefits, financial wellbeing, perks and rewards that go beyond salary. They also include tools for employee feedback, internal communications and intranets, and virtual onboarding assistants. These technologies are designed to improve worker experience and promote a positive corporate culture.

Evaluate Stage

The Evaluate stage features tools that assess worker performance, manage compensation and promote internal mobility. Through consistent evaluation, managers can ensure their teams are not only growing and excelling in their roles, but also receiving the necessary support when challenges arise, as well as compensation that accurately reflects their responsibilities and contributions.

Advances in this stage include AI capabilities around data collection and determining meaningful signals in performance reviews. In addition, AI-powered tools are used for aggregating data across disparate systems and providing external market context to assist in data-led decision-making.

Develop Stage

The Develop stage focuses on learning and development tools. Similar to the Evaluate stage, there is a vertical that features tools for internal mobility; however, under the Develop stage, additional tools are included for skills management and analytics. The internal talent marketplaces sub-vertical increases access for community volunteering, ERGs, training systems and learning academies. Several of the technologies are enhanced by AI-based matching algorithms that use worker skill profiles and job requirements as criteria.

A large percentage of the Develop stage is dedicated to learning tools that support upskilling, reskilling, career growth and compliance education. There are several AI-based capabilities that assist L&D managers with educational development, such as creating training courses with videos, tests, gamification capacities and overall learning content. There are also AI-based training platforms that use content tagging to provide learning recommendations, cohort-based learning and microlearning.

Manage Stage

The Manage stage directly impacts the day-to-day management of an organization and guides nearly all HR-related activities. While the expected tools to manage time and attendance, payroll and shift management, this third version of the Talent Management Technology Ecosystem also introduces a new sub-vertical dedicated to the new AI, agentic AI and generative AI solutions now available.

These tools help businesses stand up and manage AI adoption that now underpins nearly all workforce functions. These functions include automating workflows, drafting communications, career development coaches and reduction of administrative activities.

In addition, Talent Tech Labs has added a sub-vertical that focuses on change management. As more businesses are adding AI capabilities, shifting to skills-based hiring and navigating geopolitical changes, these tools have become bedrock for successful growth and expansion.
